Despite the rippling effect of gentrification, top-down development and housing decisions made over the past twenty years, the community has become a focal point for low-income Latino and immigrant families and the homeless. Neighbors' Consejo focuses primarily on Latino men and women who are homeless or at-risk
of homelessness in Ward One and lack adequate support due to a variety of economic, social and medical issues.
Situated in the heart of the Mount Pleasant community in Washington, DC, Neighbors' Consejo serves clients throughout the Washington D.C. metropolitan area, with a focus on neighborhoods in Ward One. We focus on Latino men and women residing in eight different neighborhoods: Adams Morgan, Columbia Heights, Kalorama Heights, Lanier Heights, LeDroit Park, Mount Pleasant, Park View and areas around U Street/Cardozo and Howard University.
Ward One is an extremely culturally diverse region of the city, with a population of more than 70,000. Various ethnic groups live and work in neighborhoods including 16,000 Latinos and 30,000 African-Americans. A range of community members including long-term tenants, recent immigrants, small business owners, teachers, parishioners and the homeless constitute the degree of evolving socioeconomic levels from within this community.
