Fully certified by the D.C. Department of Health as a substance abuse treatment facility, Neighbors' Consejo provides the only intensive, all-day program for homeless Latino men with co-occurring mental illness and chronic substance abuse problems. This week program approaches the needs of our clients with a focus on common values, such as family, community, personal responsibility, and moral improvement, in order emphasize the importance of a strong support network during initial recovery.
Program
Once accepted into the program, clients undergo a twelve-step recovery program that consists of 50 hours of individual and group intervention sessions per week for three months. A licensed mental health counselor and certified addiction counselor provide daily therapy and educational workshops to clients in an intensive, outpatient environment.
Daily activities include ESL and literacy instruction, computer training, and recreational events. Individual and group-level counseling interventions focus on addiction therapy, recovery, and educational workshops.
In addition, a psychiatrist from the Department of Mental Health is available on a weekly basis to conduct full psychiatric evaluations.
Facts and Figures
In 2002, 65 percent of patients successfully completed the 90-day program and maintained their sobriety. More than 30 men have successfully graduated from the program and learned to live without drugs and alcohol leading them toward a sober and productive life.
