Mt. Pleasant Elected Representatives Vote in Favor of Preserving Shelter in their Neighborhood Vicinity

October 6, 2003 - Mount Pleasant Advisory Neighborhood Commission 1D voted unanimously for a resolution in favor of fully replacing La Casa shelter's current capacity in a new facility on the 1400 block of Irving St. N.W.

La Casa residents have fought a difficult anti-displacement campaign for over a year since the city originally announced that the land where the shelter now stands would be slated for apartment and condominium development. The ANC 1-D affirmative resolution follows a similar resolution passed by Columbia Heights ANC 1-A in September.

Neighborhood Picnic Celebrates the Right to Recovery!

Musicians at Recovery PicnicSeptember is National Recovery Month. Neighbors' Consejo celebrated the right to recovery with more than seventy of our friends, neighbors, and family members who are facing addiction and regaining health at a neighborhood picnic on Friday, September 26, 2003 on our front patio.

The picnic acknowledged the community-led efforts to overcome challenges with the city's substance abuse prevention and treatment support system. Fellow allies, community leaders and social service Programas were honored during the event. Guests included Mr. Ted Loza of Council Member Jim Graham's office (D-W1) and Mr. Adrian Domiguez of the Addiction, Prevention and Recovery Administration (APRA). Maria Paige, NC Director of Programas, presented certificates of appreciation to NC volunteers John Cheney, Pilar Vergara, Giovanna Hedrich and Maria Matal.  Read full story

Hurricane Warning Outreach to Neighborhood Residents without Housing

September 17, 2003 - Neighbors' Consejo continues to alert people without housing about the hurricane warning. In the event of a serious storm, all city shelters will remain open 24 hours and any person will have access to the shelters-- homeless or not-- until a more appropriate spot is found, or until the storm ends and it is safe to leave.

The only Ward I emergency shelter is La Casa, located at 1436 Irving St. NW.

In the event of a furious storm, the city may open additional buildings. Additional information about shelter schedules and transportation will be provided and up-dated by the D.C. shelter hotline:

DC Shelter Hotline: 1-800-535-7252

If you know someone on the street, please share this information with him or her!! (see PDF Fliers in Spanish & English) Thank you!

July, 2003 - The Neighbors' Consejo Annual Report outlines the steps taken during the 2002 Fiscal Year to further our mission of connecting homeless and low-income men, women and families to social and economic opportunities. We served more than 1,000 clients last year, helping them transition from crisis to stability through effective case management, employment services, substance abuse treatment and transitional housing Programas.

It is only through talking to our clients that we are able to truly demonstrate the difference we make in the com-munity. The 2002 Annual Report showcases the personal stories of five individuals, providing a snapshot of our work with the homeless and at-risk population of Adams Morgan, Columbia Heights and Mount Pleasant in 2002. From Wilman, who overcame alcoholism and life on the streets, to Maria, who described Neighbors' Con-sejo as "a site of real solidarity in the community," each has a compelling story to tell.  Read the full report here (6Mb)
